Lies we tend to believe about Happiness

I am not happy!

The farmer and  the Land!

Take a minute to think about the above statement for a minute. Why would you say that you are not happy ? What or who influences your happiness? Happiness can be defined as a state of well- being categorized by emotions ranging from contentment to intense joy. What this definition fail to mention is joy and contentment in what, that is where we have a decision to make.

For years I believed that my happiness was dependent on others perception of me, on my accomplishments, money, love from others, my relationships, my emotional state, you name it. I believed that to be happy I had to have curtain things, wrong thoughts I must say. It’s like this, I would think “I will be happy, if I get a new car because my current car is stressing me out”. When I get the new car and the maintenance bill comes…ooops! I am not happy again, “this car is expensing me”. I am not saying that we shouldn’t desire things but don’t let possessions be the determining factor for our happiness. In my example above the pursuit of happiness from things, is never ending, after one is fulfilled another feeling of discontent is formed.

Our happiness should reside in knowing who we are, knowing that our life is eternal in the hands of God.

Our happiness should be just that, ours! something we decide in our heart to be.

I read something in The Mind Connection bible plan by Joyce Meyer that says, God knows about our problems before we ever got them, and He already has a plan for our solution. In the meantime, we can choose to enjoy life (be happy) while we wait. Matthew 6:33 says but seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you. First we ought to find ourselves in God who is our source, pursue right living and a right standing with him, get to know God in a real and intimate way… and he promises to grant all our desires. Awesome! what a mighty God we serve.

How can I be in a difficult situation an still be happy?

  1. Your happiness should not and cannot be determined by anyone or anything. This will be a hard one but keep reminding yourself of this. The enemy came but to steal to kill and to destroy, that includes your happiness, but Christ came that we might have life and have it more abundantly (see John 10:10).
  2. Happiness is a decision, you decide to be happy. Enjoy your life, spend time with family and friends. Impact some life positively out of selflessness. Choose to not let your negative opinion in a matter influence how you respond.
  3. What are you willing to trade to be happy? People whether we class them as being good or bad can disappoints us (our expectations may not be theirs). In the midst of the disappointment what will you do? Will you trade bitterness, strife and unforgiveness and choose to be happy and release those mind-binding spirits. Trust God to work it out and not let the actions of others influence your thinking. 2 Chronicles 20:15… For the battle is not yours, but God’s!
  4. Happiness cannot be depend on our emotions in a situation. Look at your life in a wholistic way, what are you thankful for? What prayers have God already answered?. Remember that God is our source for love, joy, peace, strength… in God we find your identity. Our identity as defined in Galatians 2:20 (NIV) is, I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. This in itself is the source of our happiness, Christ lives in me, in him i have abundant life not in my circumstances!
  5. Encourage yourself in the word of God, stand on his promises. Go in the word search for scriptures that represent your current circumstances and let them minister to you. I recommend for starters Psalms 37, 2 Corinthians 12:9-10, open your life to God let him wash your mind and help you have a new perspective and default setting.

Our happiness should reside in knowing who we are, knowing that our life is eternal in the hands of God.

Continue to be encouraged and encourage yourself daily as you step into happiness.
