Do you know who you are?
What is it that defines you? *think for a moment*
I always thought that I knew who I was. My Identity was defined by my character, being a strong woman, a great mother, a caring person someone who looks for the best in others, a motivator, I defined me by my strengths by what makes me like-able in the eyes of others. It’s OK to be all of this but who we are, should not defined by anything that we do or don’t do, our job or role (developer, nurse, mother, wife/husband etc.). We are defined by who God says we are – our divine purpose.
Our identity drives our actions and responses to our situation.
Why I can’t be defined by what I do or by my roles in life?
I am a mother, I am a father, a spouse, a teacher…you may be in the natural but these are considered your role in life and not really who you are. When you know who you are, you begin to live life from the inside out. No external issue or situation can affect your mindset and change your opinion of you. I believe that knowing this can help anyone who may be going through depression or have an identity issue. If you link who you are to your various roles in life or our traits, then who you are can change depending on the situation.
Who we are should be constant. Nothing can shift who we are.
Once met a guy while buying fish on one of my visits to Tobago, he approached me and introduced himself to me in the following way he said ” Hello, my name is… and I am a thief and a rapist”. My reaction to him was OK, but why are you labeling yourself like that. He responded by saying, “I just want to get what I did out of the way so that I can see your perception of me.” I was taken aback, and no I was not afraid. We did not get to talk much but that conversation was a bit disturbing. People go around identifying themselves with all kind of “worldly” labels, linking their identity to their past mistakes, sometimes we are guilty of putting labels on other, generating our perception of who they are. We have to begin to love like Jesus did with that agape kind of love, looking beyond the faults and issues of other and see and call forth the Christ in them.
Look beyond the faults and issues of other and see and call forth the Christ in them.
What does God say about me?
I am a new creation and ambassador for the lord!
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. Now all things are of God, who has reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation, that is, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not imputing their trespasses to them, and has committed to us the word of reconciliation. Now then, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were pleading through us: we implore you on Christ’s behalf, be reconciled to God.” II Corinthians 5:17-20 NKJV.
God says in Christ you are a new creation! so why live in the habits of the old man, the old man struggles with his identity, knowing and believing what God says about him. We are his ambassadors, which means as we learn we have to feed his sheep, tell people about the goodness of God in your life. When God blesses you, you have to use that blessing to bless someone else too – you are responsible for what you do with Jesus.
I am a spirit being!
“But whoever is united with the Lord is one with him in spirit.” 1 Corinthians 6:17(NIV). “God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” John 4:24 NKJV. “May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.” 1 Thessalonians 5:23(NIV)
We are a people made up of spirit, soul and body. The spirit man is saved when we accept Jesus Christ as our lord and savior. Our souls which is our mind and our thoughts our behaviors is what needs to be brought into alignment with the word of God daily. The more we remain in the word the more we become more like him. As our soul man comes into alignment so does the body, the temple of God. Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. If nastiness comes out of your mouth check your heart and your mind that is an indication that we have more of our stuff to give to the lord.
I was crucified with Christ, Christ lives in me!
“I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.” Galatians 2:20 NKJV.
This scripture is awesome, it says that when Christ was crucified I was there (the old sinful nature). Since my old nature was crucified with Christ, I died, it no longer I who live but Christ lives in me by faith – I need to believe this and live it. The scriptures says without faith it is impossible to please God. Knowing that Christ lives in me gives me a sense of peace, I Delisa don’t need to fight up, Christ is in me, I now have to represent him. The Christ in me is love, no bitterness and hate and gossip. The Christ in me is peace and longstuffing, so I can be patient. Knowing and believing that Christ is in me released me from bondage and allows me to live front the Christ that is in me. When your feelings want to take over remind yourself that the Christ in me is… and slap your feelings back in order!
Knowing and believing that Christ is in me released me from bondage and allows me to live front the Christ that is in me.
I am the righteousness for God!
“God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” 2 Corinthians 5:21 NIV.
On the cross Christ became sin for us, he became all our sins past, present and future. Our sin was nailed to the cross, so that in Christ we become the righteousness of God. Stop trying to be righteous it is not by works that we become righteous, we are righteous in Christ. To fulfill righteousness – right living – it is now up to us to live a righteous life.
If you want to know more about what Christ says about you get to know him in a real way seek him through his word and prayer.
So then who are you?
We are spirit beings on kingdom assignment to fulfill the will of God in the earth. Who you are is beyond what the world defines. Rise up in your spiritual authority and kingdom assignment, be the true ambassadors that Christ desires of us. I love this scripture John 21:17, Jesus is speaking to Simon Peter his disciple, “He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me?” Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, “Do you love Me?” And he said to Him, “Lord, You know all things; You know that I love You.” Jesus said to him, “Feed My sheep.” This is our kingdom assignment to feed his sheep to tell everyone about Jesus no matter what.
I always prayed for salvation for my loved ones who aren’t saved until one day while saying this prayer the lord spoke to me, he said “if your don’t tell them about me how would they know me.” It clicked! I need to speak to my loved ones about God no matter what. What would you do with Jesus, knowing your new found identity.
Keep pressing forward when the winds come don’t get discouraged and try to fix it in the flesh, place it at Jesus’ feet give him your ashes, commit your sinful nature to him let him wash you as you focus on his word.
Love you! and Get to know what God says about you in his word. Leave us some scriptures below…
