Whenever I am in Tobago my father is so excited. He will take me to the garden and show me all that he has done. He would say, while pointing at his crops, “all this, I do for my children, not for me.” Oh how I love my dad, My father the Gardner.
The job of the Gardner
Like my earthly father has provided, pruned and prepared for his children so does our Heavenly Father provide all that he has for us. In return he wants covenant relationship with us forever. In John 15: 1-5 (NIV) Jesus was teaching his disciples saying, “I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful. You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.”
In the scriptures outlined above Jesus referred to himself as the true vine and his father the Gardner. The more we as leaves and branches stay connected to the vine we will continue to be taken care of by the father, that’s a promise. What I like about this scripture is that it depicts the process we all go through in our connection with the vine. The branches that are cut off are our fleshly ways, bad attitudes etc. as long as we stay connected to the vine, allowing our lives to be pruned and protected by the Gardner. Likewise if we do not connect with Jesus our saviour desiring to walk according to the flesh (see Galations 5: 19-21), we will not bear fruit and we ourselves will be cut off from the kingdom of God.
What kind of branch are you?
I choose to be the branch that has a covenant relationship with my father. If I don’t honor him, love and serve him there will be no need for him to prune and prepare for me. Because of my love for my earthy father he wants to honor our relationship by making a way for me. Same as our Heavenly Father, he desires to walk with us daily, our life should represent that connection to the vine. It is therefore important that we stay connected in order to prosper.
As a branch we have to submit to the pruning. The word of God says that they that worship him must do so in spirit and truth, its through our spirit we connect to the father. In order for us to say connected and bear fruit we have to live by the spirit of God – do as he will do. Galatians 5 :22- 23 says, “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.” To know the father we have to get close to him, seek his face through his word, love and worship him. The more we behold him with unveiled faces and lives the more we become like him (see 2 Corinthians 3:18), walking according to his desires.
