What does your culture say?
Daniel in my books is a legend and I am a fan of DC legends of Tomorrow. He was a legend and hero in his time and is still an example for us to trust in God and patiently endure today. We have been studying the book and story of Daniel at church for almost two months. He was a man that understood the principles of God and knew its importance for his survival and to stay in continual favor while in a foreign land. He held the word of God as an absolute standard for his life that he walked out the following principle:
“Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.” Matthew 6:33 NLT
In a culture that says live as I live, worship what I worship, drink as I do, do relationships like I do I am amazed, at how Daniel, when the king has already designed a meal plan for these men, stood up and asked for his customary meal plan. I will be honest, if it was me, I might have given in and said well there is no other choice, let me eat. We often times can find ourselves lost in the ‘worldly’ because we do not want to stand out or be a bother. Daniel purposed in his heart that he will not eat the kings meat or drink the wine (see Daniel 1:8). In order to purpose in his heart he had to know the word of God, understand who he was, know and trust in his God regardless of the outcome. It’s like he had such a trust relationship with God that allowed him to seek his life first. Like I mentioned to a friend recently, it seemed as though Daniel lived a life of prayer and fasting; he chose to honor God by being set apart despite the odds legal or otherwise. The law even said that he should not worship God but what did Daniel do? Amazingly mind blowing; he opened his window as usual and gave honor to God.
What can separate you from God? Only you.
Here his state of mind, response, hearts position and level of trust in God is what we should aspire to in this set apart life.
Why be counter cultural?
We allow so much issues to keep us separated from God, a God that desires intimacy with us. He desires our worship; the laying down of our lives so that we can pick up his. Because Daniel sought and lived a set apart life he found favor with God and man. We have to be counter cultural and word configured so that we live in continued favor. His pursuit of God was in such devotion and reverence his prays were heard and answered by God. As seen in Daniel 10:12 (nkjv) the word says “Then he said to me, “Do not fear, Daniel, for from the first day that you set your heart to understand, and to humble yourself before your God, your words were heard; and I have come because of your words.”
Oh guys! I am so excited and encouraged by Daniel’s life, let’s be a Daniel in our current culture. So that the purity of Christ can be preserved in us, causing no separation from that intimate walk with him.
“But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king’s delicacies, nor with the wine which he drank; therefore he requested of the chief of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself. Now God had brought Daniel into the favor and goodwill of the chief of the eunuchs.” Daniel 1:8-9 NKJV
